Sake Ice Cream

Drink it on ice as is, or put it in the freezer to make alcoholic ice cream! (5%)

I was really surprised when I came across this in my local supermarket. It came in 3 flavors, and I was intrigued by the idea that we could make “Soft Cream O-Sake”.

See the process here in one of my JapanBytes short videos

The end product was actually pretty nice, I only added chocolate (I wanted to add mint too, but didn’t have any…)

It started melting quickly though!

Fishing Restaurant – Catch your Dinner!

There are a lot of theme restaurants in Japan, but this one was a really nice surprise. Housed in a giant warehouse, there was a huge boat in the middle, with water all around. You could fish from your table, or opt to fish from the boat.

Fishing right from your table
Going for the pirate style fishing!

Once you catch a fish, you can choose how you want it prepared and enjoy the delicious meal of something freshly caught.

We had this one sliced up and served as sashimi
I caught this one in a smaller pond, we had it “shioyaki” or salt grilled
Great atmosphere!
Challenge of finding dinner
Nice place overall

It’s been years since we went, but I would love to go again sometime soon. It’s a fun time, and the food is great! An experience I think most people would enjoy at least once.

Nodoguro – Japan’s rare and delicious sushi

Are you a fan of sushi? I have been, since I was 9 years old. So I was shocked when I took a trip to the Hokuriku area of Japan.

Which has come to be one of my favorite areas so far.

I was just looking to enjoy seeing a new ocean, as I had never been to the Sea of Japan..but I was happily surprised by a new sushi I had never had or even heard of before: Nodoguro!

Not so sexy, but definitely delicious
Lightly seared, it had an amazing blend of flavor and I feel in love!

If you want to see more about Nodoguro or the trip I took (where I sleep in a car and hop my way around Hokuriku) then check out my new video below. I explain more about this mystery sushi and why I love it.

If you have had a chance to try it, or would like to, let me know in the comments section of the video, I would love to hear more from people about their sushi experiences!

Amazake – Japan’s Ultra Superfood

Amazake, which is basically “Sweet Sake”, is usually very low or non alcoholic. However due to the process in which it’s made, and depending on the way it is made, it has the potential to carry a load of health benefits.

It may not look great, but it sure tastes amazing!

I explain more about the details in the video below, but if you’re not a video person the recap is below the video:

Amazake is said to provide a variety of health benefits, including hair and skin care, weight loss, sleep aid, managing stress and depression and better concentration. Now I’m not a doctor so I have no idea if this is true, but I found a lot of sources online that say it is. My opinion is, it tastes good and I enjoy it, so if it also has health benefits that’s a plus!

There are ways to make it from scratch, which I would love to go into next time once I do some investigating of my own.

Here are some photos from the above video, if you have any questions I would be happy to answer anytime.

Small drinkable type
A bigger very delicious type
Concentrated type, my favorite

If you haven’t already tried amazake, definitely head to your local Japanese market and try and find some. It’s refreshing hot in winter and cold in summer, so don’t hesitate to enjoy the taste and health benefits that go with it!

A Twist on Japanese Taste

So I was at an okonomiyaki restaurant awhile back, and they had a potato okonomiyaki. It was amazing, but what really made it special was they recommended only using 2 ingredients for toppings. So I tried it in other okonomiyaki, and then I tried it in Takoyaki and more things and found that this was an amazing taste.

I show an example in this short video with some Gindaco frozen takoyaki

Check it out!

10x Spicy Red Chicken

Karaage Kun Red at 10x the spice level!

I have long been a fan of Karaage Kun Red, it’s that perfect pick me up when you are feeling a little naughty and deserve something with a little spice and nice flavor. When I saw this 10x version at Lawson, I couldn’t refuse

A warning about the level of spice and what’s inside. Even the chicken’s hair is on fire!

Karaage Kun Red is already a bright color, let’s check this one out.

And……It was so good. And Spicy! I don’t know if this will make a comeback but I will definitely buy it again
